Fall Fantastic Ride to Squires Castle 65 miler

A great ride today lead by Toby. We had 12 riders and it was amazing. 50s to start with and then finishing around mid 70s made the ride feel easy. Here are some photos from the ride.

All – Looks like an excellent forecast for this weekend. Temps will start in the low 50’s then reach into the high 70’s. Great time to see the fall colors.

I have a proposed route for Sunday below. This is an extension of a ride we did earlier this year up to Gates Mills which everyone enjoyed. Destination is Squire’s Castle in North Chagrin reservation. Course is 66 miles with a 2k ft climbing and plenty of options to cut the course short if needed. 7:30 am roll out from Caribou in Hudson.

Labor Day Weekend ride and photo

Today our annual Tour de Hudson and club photo took place. The numbers were down due to some very scary radar which had us considering bailing out. But we had 21 show up and rode rain free for a nice 27 mile loop of Hudson. The photo is already in Caribou's hands and should be going up on the wall to join the other two shortly. We introduced 3 young guys to group riding in Ross Palazzo, Adam Ambroziak and Connor Coburn as well as had 3 young ladies from Summa Health join us in Brenda, Julie and Vicki. Mike Pulte put together a great route and provided cue sheets for all. John Gusz and wife Mindy rode the tandem and ended up helping Mike Kattan fix 3 flats in one ride. Unheard of. We even had the mayor on this ride. Have a great Labor Day and see you at the Taste or on our ride tomorrow at 8 a.m.

2011 Sweetcorn Challenge

Great time had by all yesterday (Sunday July 31, 2011). Weather was perfect, blue skies and reasonably low humidity. The majority of us rode the 50 miler.

We started out with a gentle descent into the shaded rolling hills above Brecksville heading towards North Royalton and then a couple of climbs into Hinckley where we ran into some of the ABC guys riding the 100 miler. (They rode the first 50 miles at over 21mph avg including hills – Rick, hope you survived ok that looked tough).

Our loop continued into Bath and then down towards Valley View Road. After a water stop we headed towards the farmers market at Bolanz Rd. After a quick mechanical fix to a broken chain on the tandem (fortunately Dennis had packed a chain tool) we broke into two groups. The first tackled Oak Hill, the second Major Road. Hats off to the tandem team who had an absolutely stellar hill climb (Dave Heater and Harvey Litowitz).

I could barely get my camera into action before they flew past me. Truth be told we drafted off them for much of the remaining ride. We finally finished back up in Richfield with about 3300ft climbing and 53 miles. Mike Pulte won the town sign sprint challenge with perfect placement at each one taking 6 of the 8 sprints (until next time amigo)….

After eating our sweet corn lunch on the green listening to the band play, we headed down to the Lizard for a few cold recovery drinks – the perfect end to the perfect day.

Single file cyclists in Solon

I commute to work in Solon on occassion. When I am on Liberty road in Solon, I come across this sign. It bothers me. The road has absolutely no shoulder and this posted sign supersedes the state law of riding two abreast. Basically it gives the wrong impression to motorists that we cyclists have some sort of limited access rights to this road. I keep meaning to ask the Solon authorities why the signs exist and if they are aware that they are out of step with the vehicle code. Anyone know anything more about this?

Sat and Sunday recaps

Dear Hudson Velo Club,
The rain has taken a break, the sun is rising by 6:02 a.m. and the temps have returned to normal. With that in mind, I announce Saturday and Sunday rides from Caribou at 7 a.m. with a 7:05 rollout sharp. Don't get left out.

Need a Saturday ride leader who could suggest a route 25 miles with options for more and possibly cue sheets. I will take on Sunday which looks to have a bit more risk of rain.

Get motivated, we all wish we were in better riding shape so come on out and do your best.

14 show up for 80 degree ride on April 10, 2010

That's right, we had 14 roll out today from Caribou at 1 p.m. for a nice 30 miler that saw more convertibles and motorcycles than you could imagine. The nice weather really brought them out of the woodwork. We even saw fellow HVC member Steve Hervey going the wrong way in his car. Come join us Steve. The legs felt great and we all hung together on the various climbs including Major and Oak Hill the easy way. We finished with a fitness test on Truxell which told many of us we have work to do. Look in the Yahoo group data base for most recent times. At least we have a bench mark for the next outing to improve upon. But boy did it feel good to be in the 80's. See you out there next time.

Best info graphic I've seen on the subject of taking-the-lane / lane control.

Taking the lane is such an important concept it diserves it's own website.

The key point is that when you squeeze over to the shoulder, which ironically people do because they're intimidated by traffic... then you actually invite traffic into your space by giving them space to "squeeze by"... which is exactly the sort of thing that is dangerous and intimidating for you the cyclist anyway. It's a form of self-fulfilling prophecy. The way to be safe is to be bold when necessary and anticipate when there is not room for you and a car to pass safely and then take the lane proactively to prevent drivers from attempting to take it from you. Of course there's a fine line between being bold and just blocking traffic or being dangerous. A fine line indeed.

We had 13 riders and did a modest 27 miles today in nice cool fall weather. Leigh had his camera along and got some great shots. A fun moment was when a woman got out of her car at an intersection in the valley to take our picture so all of us could be in it.

Fall Colors greet 12 riders in perfect weather

While the temps may have started around 49 degrees this morning, it did not take long for the group of 12 to warm up and enjoy a great trip around the Brecksville reservation amongst the fall colors. We had a brief delay as we negotiated with the National Park Ranger to let us cross the tow path marathon route. Once we convinced her that we were pedestrians when we dismounted our bikes, we prevailed. Our riders in the photo left to right are: Heather, Toby, Scott, Dave, Bob, Chuck, Trey, John, John, Mike and Steve. I was the photographer in this case, Michael.

While the original route laid out a 70 mile loop, we decided by consent to halve it and had a very casual 35 miles or so upon our return to Caribou via the bike & hike trail.

Come out and join the club for a little social time as we visit the new restaurant in First and Main in Hudson. Bring a friend and meet some new ones. We will have samples of the cycling vests we are ordering both a fit kit and examples of the fabric and contruction. One nice feature on these vests is that they have the three rear pockets so you aren't reaching through the vest to get at your jersey pockets. See you tonight.

Labor Day ride largest ever - 40 riders

Hudson Velo Club saw its largest turnout of the club history with 40 riders rolling out from Caribou on Labor Day 2010. We had a great ride with many first timers joining the group. We also had some guests from Danville, CA who brought the Bike Friday Tandem and assembled it in the parking lot.

The second phase of the ride saw 10 riders regroup at 9:15 a.m. at Caribou for a 25 mile spin through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We finished up Truxell Road and contested an official Truxell Time Trial. Results are here and on our Yahoo Group site database. Erick Madi set a new club record at 10 minutes 18 seconds. He is 14 years old!

With Fox 8 News there to capture the moment, Bob and Michael took the day off on Wednesday to lead out for Ryan and Davin as they head off for a round the world bicycle tour to raise money for clean water for Fiji. We had a great day adn turned back after 52 miles for a total of 103. When we stopped in the Medina coffee shop Cool Beans, the shop owner asked how far we were going! What a great set up line. Double ride works great

Today, we had 19 show up for an easy 15 mile cruise around Hudson. We had 4 couples 3 of which were on Tandems. It was a nice pace and a great morning to be out riding. We regrouped at 8:30 a.m. and picked up a few more riders who slept in. Then we had a nice 40 mile route from Ross out to Medina county on Granger road. Really great group. Hope to see you out there soon...7 a.m. Sundays, Caribou Coffee, Downtown Hudson.

5 go 100 at Eddy's Sweet Corn Challenge

Despite the rain, which turned out to be better than 89 and sunny, five hearty Hudson Velo Club members completed the Century ride this past Sunday. We had 3 flats but only one on our direct group. We had over 4,000 feet of climbing and really had a great time. It took 8 hours which I think surprised us all. Here is the shot of the group at the finish. We enjoyed a nice dinner and beers at the Tavern of Richfield as part of our entry fee and went home with some fresh sweet corn.

July 4th Weekend Happenings!

Happy July 4th weekend,

I know people have lots of things going this weekend. I have lots of options. Sunday morning a few of us will do the Medina Twin Sizzler Bike race in age group categories. It is 27 miles and open to citizen racers. Anyone who would want to carpool or caravan out to that event, reply directly to me. I am for sure going leaving Caribou at 6 a.m.

Sunday Morning Ride - Typical ride will go out from Caribou at 7:05 a.m. Route and distance to be determined by group. If someone would like to plan a route and send cue sheets - great.

Monday Morning Ride - 7:05 a.m. Caribou - For those that have the day off and want to get a few more miles in.

Saturday Bicycle Ride at Noon April 10, 2010 from Caribou

Saturday looks better than Sunday so I am going riding at noon on Saturday leaving from Caribou Coffee in First and Main at 12:05 p.m.

We will have an A (35 miles) and a B (25 miles) ride with rough cue sheets at left. I will bring cue sheets to choose from. It will be a no drop ride of around 25-35 miles into and out of the Valley, you will choose your distance. Similar to what we did last weekend. No Oak Hill, No Ira. But maybe a nice long ride up Columbia and/or Major Rd. out of the West side of the Valley and back home on Truxell.

Bring: helmet, flat repair kit, no i-pods, I will provide the PowerBar Products pre-ride.

Temps will be in the low 50s to start the ride and rise 10 degrees during the ride.

I hope you can make it out for this 2 - 2 1/2 hour ride.

Easter Sunday Ride

We had 7 riders show up for an impromtu 2:00 p.m. Easter Sunday afternoon ride. New rider who responded to the Hub Times photo and contact info, Steve, gave it a go along with, Tom, Ed, Ross, Amanda, Howard and Michael.

It was beautiful spring weather with temps tickling above 70 degrees and the sun shining. We went down 303 to Truxell into the valley and tried to keep the first 5 miles of roll out below 15 mph. Amanda peeled off early and headed back to Solon fighting a respiratory infection but was solid in her effort. The we screamed down into the valley and looped around Hale Farm and back up Riverview to Peninsula and finished up back Truxell. No time trial, too early in the season for that nonsense. Just a nice ride with a little hill work. We stopped at the stop signs and made a good name for cycling early in the season. 33 miles in total and a pace around 16.3 mph.

Well if you have not been getting out this winter, you have been missing some great exercise and fun. A few of us have been trail running and now cross country skiing. While we have had this cold snap the cross country conditions over at Kendall Lake just off the world famous Truxell Time trial route are amazing. Sunday, Frank Loth, Harvey Litowitz, Tom Reynolds and Michael Coburn hit the trails for 3 hours. Appalachian outfitters has packages available and the National Park Service rents equipment starting at $7.50 for a half day at the lodge at Kendall Lake. Come out and join us as we build the winter Peleton.

Here is just one of the great photos taken by Leigh Atkins on our ride last Thursday that turned into a circle century of Akron. The rest are posted on the Yahoo Group "hudsonveloclub". One thing we have learned this fall is that there is a lot of great riding to be had in October and even November if the temps are at 38 degrees or better and the road is dry.

We will meet at Caribou Coffee in Hudson downtown first and main at 7:45 a.m. and roll out at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Join us for a ride in the valley and Bedford reservation metroparks. Total length is 43 miles but options to cut off sooner for less miles.

Hudson Velo Club at Alpe d'huez

I went to France in Sept and had the chance to climb Alpe d'huez. Here is the video of the ride. Note I wore my Hudson Velo Club kit and hat for the ride. It was great.

Join us for our twice yearly Tour of Hudson Ride. We have a route with short cuts in it which will allow you to make a 32 mile ride into a 24 mile ride. Meet at Caribou Coffee in First and Main at 7:00 a.m. for photos in front of our various downtown sponsors and then we will roll out at around 7:15 a.m.

Today, 17 riders rolled out and looked resplendant in our new HVC kits. We had a nice 50 mile ride and avoided all the rain pockets out there on the road.

The order has been placed for our jerseys, shorts, hats and arm warmers. We ordered over $4,200 worth of stuff which is pretty amazing. They are scheduled to ship around August 15th from Wisconsin where they are made. Mt. Borah is the supplier and the web site is http://www.customsublimation.com/. The Customer Service guy there is Mark Konrad and he has been great to work with.

We will plan a pick up party at a downtown establishment and then a group ride shortly there after. I also thought another "Tour of Hudson" around Labor Day weekend Sunday might be good. We can do a 25 mile flat loop of Hudson and then throw a valley out and back in there in full uniform.

Bike Swap Info

The bike swap is in Hudson Park Estates at the Pool Picnic area (cross streets are WoodSpring and Blue Heron). Kids and Adult bikes are encouraged. Pricing and sales will be handled by individual parties.

Should be a great ride for the Hudson Velo Club on Sunday June 28th from the Green in Hudson. Meet in front of Caribou Coffee at First and Main in downtown Hudson. Working on a route which will have a turn around getting a group back to the green by 9 a.m. and another longer option for those looking for 45+ miles. First loop should be around 30 miles.
